Check out this exclusive look at the recording of Gowanus Radio Orchestra’s upcoming song, “Sunrise”.
Our Kickstarter for Sea of Lakes is 60% funded with only seven days left and we need your help to get to 100%!
Recorded in Hungary with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, Dan says of the song:
“Stay overnight in your childhood room
Where you used to watch the light bloom
Now you sleep 'til afternoon…”
“There is something about sleeping in your childhood bedroom as an adult that simultaneously comforts and confounds. Waking up, still groggy and disoriented, the past and the present come together in this sort of brackish tide. And the further you’ve drifted from your past self, the stronger this tide pulls. How can you not get swept away? I always knew “Sunrise” was going to be the opening track for our album, “Sea of Lakes”. It’s the start of a journey; not a journey back to some idealized past, or to some troubled present, but somewhere all together different. With any luck, dry land.
Musically, “Sunrise” was most inspired by the World War II anthem, “We’ll Meet Again”, as sung by Vera Lynn, and backed by Roland Shaw and His Orchestra. That moment when all the “Sailors, Soldiers, & Airmen of Her Majesty’s Forces” join in and sing together is uplifting, heartbreaking, and sublime. I knew if we were going to try to capture that spirit, we would need something akin to a big band. We found our sound thanks to a gorgeous arrangement by longtime collaborator Greg Pliska, and the incredible musicians of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. We were also fortunate enough to capture video of the recording session, which we can share with you now.
In order to share the rest of this record with you, we do need your support. Our kickstarter is now in its final week, and we're asking for you to join us in making this album a reality. Your backing will not only help us finish the album, but allow us to continue to pay all the wonderful musicians who work with us a living wage.”
