Residents and Waste Pickers Working Together

Residents within a complex in a Durban suburb have agreed to sort their weekly collections of recyclable materials for collection by local waste pickers. By residents sorting at source in their homes and in partnership with waste pickers in their area they remind us that we can: 1. Support the work and livelihoods of informal workers who already do an incredible social and environmental good in our city. 2. Contribute towards more sustainable environmental practices by diverting waste from landfills and reducing harmful Green House Gases that contributes to Climate Change. 3. Support Zero Waste practices and circular economies in environmentally just ways! Have a look at this video to see how Durbanites are working together for a Zero Waste Future! If you are interested in championing Zero-Waste practices in your neighbourhood the best way to start is to speak to your neighbours and to waste pickers/reclaimers in your area, respect and recognise the work they do, and then plan together how you can best divert more recyclables from landfill!
