What did an ordinary Roman actually do all day?
Forget emperors, gladiators, and great military victories for a moment. More than 2,000 years ago, everyday life in Rome meant crowded streets, noisy apartments, public baths, street food, endless queues, and trying to make it home before dark.
In this documentary, we follow an ordinary Roman through an entire day — from the early morning greeting, when poor citizens depended on wealthy patrons for food or money, to the crowded streets, public fountains, busy markets, and enormous bath complexes.
But daily life in Rome was stranger than most people imagine. Apartments had no running water or private toilets. People carried water up several flights of stairs, bought meals from street-food counters, and shared public latrines with complete strangers. And when midday arrived, much of the city slowed down to escape the heat.
🔭 In this video, you'll discover:
• Why poor Romans visited wealthy patrons before breakfast
• What daily work, housing, and life in the crowded city were really like
• How slavery shaped the Roman economy and everyday life
• What happened inside Roman public baths and public toilets
• What ordinary Romans ate and why bread distributions mattered
• How entertainment, from chariot races to gladiatorial spectacles, shaped Roman society
• What life was like for Roman women, children, and families
