We had two Yamaha RD400s, both in original paint. One has just been sold. The other is still here. The RD400 is the end of a line. It was the last of Yamaha's air-cooled RDs — the final development of the recipe before the water-cooled LC arrived and changed everything. Reed valves, six speeds, 398cc, and almost no weight to carry it. Riders who owned one will tell you it was the sweetest of them all: quick enough to be exciting, light enough to be forgiving, and blessed with a power delivery that made every road feel shorter than it was. Original paint is the part that matters now. Almost every surviving RD has been resprayed, restyled or rebuilt at some point over fifty years. Finding one still wearing what it left the factory in is a different proposition entirely.
