Sources (kahani kahan se hai):
Mahabharata, Vana (Aranyaka) Parva, Ghosha-yatra upa-parva (Ganguli sections 236–246) — Karna and Shakuni urge Duryodhana to visit Dvaitavana on the pretext of a cattle count to see the exiled Pandavas in distress; the Gandharva king Chitrasena blocks the lake, Karna's chariot is broken and he flees, Duryodhana is captured with his brothers and the royal women; Yudhishthira sends Arjuna and Bhima to free them; Chitrasena, Arjuna's friend, says Indra sent him because Duryodhana came to mock the Pandavas; Yudhishthira frees Duryodhana and tells him never to act so rashly again and go home in peace
Mahabharata, Vana Parva, Ganguli section 247 — Duryodhana says death in battle would have been better and that in shame he wished the earth would open; he resolves to fast
Mahabharata, Vana Parva, Ganguli section 249 (Critical Edition: Duryodhana-prayopavesha / Daiteya-ahvana) — he sits on kusha grass in bark/rags, silent; Shakuni advises him to return the kingdom to the Pandavas and make peace; Dushasana falls at his feet, Duryodhana lifts and embraces him and kisses his head; the defeated Daityas and Danavas of Patala perform a fire rite with mantras of Brihaspati and Ushanas (Shukra); a strange goddess rises from the fire, asks 'what shall I do?', and carries Duryodhana to Patala
Mahabharata, Vana Parva, Ganguli section 250 — the Danavas say suicide is sinful; that they obtained him from Maheshwara by austerities; his upper body is made of vajras and cannot be cut by weapons, the lower part was made by the Goddess (Mahadeva's consort) out of flowers; Danavas will possess Bhishma, Drona, Karna and others so they fight without mercy; the soul of the slain Naraka has taken the form of Karna; Indra will take Karna's earrings and armour; the goddess returns him to his seat; he thinks it a dream and tells no one; at dawn Karna says 'no dead man conquers his foes' and Duryodhana returns to Hastinapura
Mahabharata, Vana Parva, Ganguli section 10 — sage Maitreya curses Duryodhana that Bhima will break his thigh with the mace; Sabha Parva — Bhima's vow to break Duryodhana's thigh
The story of Gandhari's gaze making Duryodhana's body hard except the thighs is not found in Vyasa's Mahabharata (Ganguli / Critical Edition); it is a later popular retelling
Interpretation (hamari vyakhya, granth ka shabdashah kathan nahi):
'Yudhishthira's kindness hurt Duryodhana more than the Gandharvas' ropes' is our reading of his lament in section 247.
Linking the lower body (not called vajra by the Danavas) with the thigh Bhima later broke is our own connection; the text does not make it.
Calling the Short's ego 'a voice inside' in the office lesson is a metaphor drawn from the Danavas possessing the warriors, not a claim of the text.
