The only honest answer is, "It depends." Getting the right gear is entirely contingent upon what you are trying to accomplish. There is no magic "1 size fits all answer." In this video, I talk about the different audio gear that I use and what I use them for. 1)Rode Vidmic Go The Rode Vidmic Go is a lightweight passive on-camera shotgun microphone that is Ideal for run and gun shooting. You can throw this mic in your bag and not have to worry about whether or not you charged the batteries the night before. You just plug it in and it is ready to go! 2) Blue Yeti (USB Condensor Microphone) USB Condensor microphones are all-in-one ready to go audio equipment that interfaces with your computer via a USB port. The Blue Yeti is BY FAR the most Youtube famous of all USB microphones. Late last year Blue released a little brother for the Yeti in the form of the Blue Yeti Nano. The Blue Yeti Nano has fewer pickup patterns to choose from but still has cardioid and stereo, most users will only ever us cardioid. They aren't the cheapest USB microphones on the market, but their sound quality is above average and well worth the extra money you would pay. 3) Zoom H1n and Zoom H1 The Zoom H1n is the closest thing you will find to a Jack-of-All-Trades microphone. It's small, portable and can interface with a computer to be used as a USB microphone. Its small form factor paired with its powerful audio recording capabilities make it my favorite audio recording device overall. It can be used as a stand-alone microphone to record audio to sync in post. You can mount it to the top of your camera with a shoe adapter and run an aux cable into your phones audio jack. Or if you have the right cables you can use it with your phone or computer as a USB Microphone for better audio performance Where the Zoom H1n really shines is as a "pre-amp" for the Rode Vicmic Go. When combined, these 2 devices offer a 1-2 punch of audio greatness that can't be beaten for under $200. You use the Rode Vidmic Go to pick up the audio, you pass it through the Zoom H1n recording it, then you connect the audio out to your camera and know you have 2 recordings! This is incredibly useful for creating a backup track just in case something happens to the main audio recorder!
