There Is No Best Digital Skill to Learn

I have been teaching digital skills since 2022, and the question I get more than any other is this: Elvis, which is the best digital skill to learn? There is no best digital skill. That question is the problem. It is the same mentality that made people pick a degree because someone said it guarantees a job. You finish, you get the paper, then you wait for someone to come and hire you. Who exactly? You do not learn a skill to get a job. You learn a skill to solve a problem. WHAT I COVER Why every "top 10 marketable skills" video misleads you. No skill is bad. Social media management, video editing and web design are all good. The difference is whether you got good enough to solve a real problem. Why certificates are close to worthless. People buy a course meant to take 11 hours, finish it in 24, ask for the certificate, then apply for job after job and get nothing. The paper was never the point. And why passion is a lie. Nobody is born with it. You develop it by getting good at something that works. MY OWN STORY At 17, just out of form 4 and waiting for my ID, I was a stock keeper at a school in Nanyuki. I was sent to a print shop one day and met a guy called OT. He designed a sticker on CorelDraw, printed it, and made 1,000 shillings in under 30 minutes. That was the moment it clicked. The money was not in the software. It was in solving somebody's problem. I started designing and printing stickers for yoghurt brands, and that became my first business. THE BLUEPRINT Here is how skills stack. You notice creators are posting videos that look terrible. That is a problem. So you learn video editing on YouTube, a free university, using CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. Then you start shooting the videos too. No expensive camera needed. A good phone works. Then you notice businesses do not know what to post at all. So you learn content calendars and become a social media manager. Then a client asks if you know anyone who builds websites. Instead of saying no, you go and learn it. Then they ask about Meta ads. You add 5,000 to your fee, spend a weekend figuring it out, and by Monday you have a solution. That is how a career gets built. Problem, skill, payment. Repeat. And stop starting with technical things because YouTube said machine learning or cyber security is hot. Start with Canva and CapCut. Then social media management. Then digital marketing. Also drop the obsession with specialising. You know how to cook, clean and drive without calling any of them your specialty.
