Welcome to one of the most beautiful and accessible adventures in the Great Otway National Park! In today’s video, we’re trekking from the coastal woodland and ocean views of the Great Ocean Road deep into the lush, wet forests of the Otway ranges. This family-friendly Grade 3 hike is a perfect break from the drive, starting just ten minutes past Lorne at the Sheoak Falls Carpark.
As we begin the trail, you’ll enjoy a well-maintained boardwalk that offers a scenic Great Ocean Road waterfall experience with spectacular views of the turquoise sea and craggy cliffs behind us. The landscape quickly shifts as we head inland, winding through a rocky gorge where towering rushes—some nearly three meters high—are alive with the sound of croaking frogs.
One of the main highlights is the tranquil fifteen-meter waterfall drop at Sheoak Falls. The water cascades down a dark, rounded rock face into a deep, shaded pool surrounded by lush ferns, creating a serene atmosphere hidden away from the coastal wind. For those looking for a bit more adventure, we tackle a steep timber staircase climb to reach the upper trail.
Further up the track, the journey gets even more exciting with a Sheoak Creek stepping stone crossing. This path leads us to the spectacular Swallow Cave, a massive grotto with unique honeycomb walls. Depending on the season, you can witness nesting swallows (Tree Martins) darting in and out of the cave to build their mud nests. Right nearby, you’ll find the hidden cascades and bird life that make this upper section feel like a secret paradise, including the beautiful Sheoak Cascades tumbling over rocky outcrops.
Whether you’re here for the bird life, like the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, or the peaceful sound of running water, this walk captures the very best of Victoria’s natural beauty. Remember to check water levels before you go, as the creek crossing can be impassable after heavy rain!
