Harley retired the Evolution engine twice, the Big Twin from 1999 and the Sportster in 2022, and both times it refused to stay gone.
It starts with Harley dealers putting cardboard under brand new bikes to catch the oil. We go back to the summer of 1978, when the Evo began as a study of Shovelhead warranty claims, through the 1981 buyout from AMF, Vaughn Beals's "durable, oil-tight, and bulletproof" vow, and 750,000 miles of road testing. Then what Harley actually kept from the Shovelhead, what it threw away, and the factory that built it, from half its bikes failing inspection to 99 percent defect-free, with a tariff and a near-bankruptcy along the way.
Then the honest part. Evos do wear out. We look at the 1983 design detail that let the top end come off with the engine still in the frame, Dave Zien's million-mile FXRT, the Twin Cam that replaced the Evo, the custom bike boom that ran on Evo-style engines from S&S, and why Harley says the Sportster is coming back for 2027, with the press reporting it's the 883 Evolution again.
