India’s CRISPR Moment: BIRSA 101, AI & the New Bio-AI Careers | Ep. 20

India is entering a fascinating frontier where CRISPR, genomics, AI and software engineering are beginning to converge. In Episode 20 of Beyond the Obvious, I explore India’s CRISPR journey — from BIRSA 101 and GenomeIndia to GlowCas9, FnCas9 and the emerging Bio-AI ecosystem — while also looking at what global CRISPR progress can teach us. This is a special episode because the subject touches medicine. Please give me five uninterrupted minutes. This is an educational exploration, not medical advice. BIRSA 101 is described by CSIR-IGIB as India’s first indigenous CRISPR-based therapy programme for severe sickle-cell anaemia. It uses an ex-vivo gene-editing approach and remains in development, with Phase-I currently expected in 2027. India is also building the data and research foundation. GenomeIndia has completed whole-genome sequencing of more than 10,000 Indians, creating an important population-genomics resource. Indian researchers have developed enhanced high-precision FnCas9 variants, while Bose Institute researchers created GlowCas9, a bioluminescent system that can help scientists visualise and track CRISPR activity. Now add AI to this picture. AI can potentially help researchers: • analyse massive genomic datasets • prioritise research candidates • predict guide activity • assess possible off-target activity • discover scientific evidence • support biological modelling • improve research-software workflows But AI does not replace biology, laboratory validation, clinicians, regulation or ethics. And this opportunity is not only for biotechnology professionals. For AI engineers, developers, architects and data specialists, emerging Bio-AI pathways may include: • Bioinformatics • Genomics data engineering • Scientific software engineering • AI/ML for biology • Scientific MLOps • Cloud and research platforms • Biomedical visualisation • Genomic privacy and cybersecurity How should a software professional prepare? CODE → AI → BIOLOGY → GENOMICS → BIOINFORMATICS → BUILD Keep your software fundamentals strong. Learn Python, AI/ML, data engineering and cloud. Then understand DNA, RNA, proteins, genomics and CRISPR fundamentals. Build responsible projects using public or synthetic data. And most importantly — collaborate with domain experts. Because AI is not an individual strength. Its greater strength emerges when biologists, doctors, researchers, software engineers, AI specialists, entrepreneurs, regulators and students build together. For safety, it intentionally does NOT design gene edits, generate wet-lab CRISPR protocols, make clinical decisions or provide medical advice. My challenge to young developers and students: Don’t wait for Bio-AI to become mainstream before you start learning. The future may not be biology versus software.
