Luxor is often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, but that does not adequately describe this extraordinary place. Nothing in the world compares to the scale and grandeur of the monuments that survived from ancient Thebes.
Luxor was constructed on the ruins of the ancient city of Thebes, the capital of Egypt during the Pharaonic New Kingdom (1550 – 1069 BC). The ancient Egyptians named the East Bank of Luxor the city of the living, while the West Bank was named the city of the dead, as all the mortuary temples and the necropolises were located there.
Here are some of the best things you can do in Luxor. In the East Bank, you have: Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Luxor Museum, Luxor mummification museum. In the West Bank, you have: Valley of the kings, valley of the queens, Howard Carter's house, colossi of Memnon, The Ramsesseum, the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Luxor sign and many others.
