This sermon explores five biblical warnings about how Christians are not to treat one another. Beginning with Paul’s picture of the church as one body in Christ in 1 Corinthians 12:12–27, we are reminded that our liberties, opinions, disagreements, and offenses must never become tools for damaging the body.
We examine five specific commands:
Do not judge one another — Romans 14:1–13
Do not bite and devour one another — Galatians 5:13–15
Do not provoke or envy one another — Galatians 5:26
Do not lie to one another — Colossians 3:1–10
Do not grudge one another — James 5:9
The picture of road rage helps illustrate the danger of selfish Christian liberty: one person's selfishness produces another person's selfishness, leading to anger, conflict, wrecks, and eventually everyone getting hurt. Paul's language of "biting and devouring" reminds us just how destructive our treatment of one another can become.
But the goal is more than simply avoiding conflict. We are members of the same body, and members of the same body should care for one another.
Before asking, "What am I allowed to do?" we should ask:
"How can I use my freedom to serve my brother?"
And before we complain, judge, envy, deceive, or hold a grudge against another believer, we should remember:
The Judge stands at the door.
