While these genres share a common lineage rooted in gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B), each developed a distinct sonic blueprint, cultural identity, and rhythmic philosophy.Together, they transformed the global musical landscape, shifting the focus of popular music from the melody-driven structures of early rock and pop to the hypnotic, rhythm-centric grooves that define modern dance music. Soul music emerged in the late 1950s and peaked in the 1960s. It squeezed the secular passion out of traditional African American gospel music and fused it with the secular rhythms of R&B.
