My name is Jena Gardner and I am the horn professor at Western Illinois University. This video series is designed to help nail your ILMEA District and All-State auditions! When you preform Allegretto Moderato by Gallay, the audition judges will be listening for correct rhythm, versatility in all ranges of the horn, and clear, accurate articulation. Here is an example for you to listen to or play along with. Stick around at the end for a few targeted practice tips! Performance Thanks for listening! Remember excellent performance takes excellent preparation. To perform your best on this longer etude, try the following practice strategies: 1. Divide the entire etude into sections or phrases. Work on one or two each day! • Here is how I divide it up! 2. Practice slowly with lots of attention to details like clarity of articulation and dynamics. Work each section up to a consistent tempo that you can play throughout. 3. Accuracy is challenging in this etude with all the large leaps from high to low and back. Practice singing, buzzing, then playing to insure you hit the note exactly how you want to. 4. Finally, record yourself often! Don’t wait until the audition is due to start recording yourself. If you record early on, you will hear lots of things that you might like to improve – this can guide your preparation until you are ready for the final recording.
