SIMULATED SESSION — ROLE-PLAY DEMONSTRATION. The "clients" in this video are actors portraying fictional characters. This is not a real counseling session, and no real client information appears in it.
This video is a role-play demonstration of a communication intervention conducted using the Hope-Focused Couple Approach (Ripley & Worthington). It was produced as a graduate counseling training exercise.
About the demonstration
"J" and "A" are fictional characters portrayed by volunteer actors working from a written case scenario. Their names, history, circumstances, and responses were created for instructional purposes and do not describe any actual person or couple. All participants consented to being recorded and to public posting.
About the intervention
The session centers on a simple Listen and Repeat exercise. Each partner takes a turn speaking briefly about the couple's chosen topic, "greater peace at home," describing what that would look like for them. The listening partner then repeats back what was heard, s̄ adding commentary, defense, or correction, and the speaker confirms or clarifies. The partners then switch roles. The aim is to slow the conversation down so that each partner feels heard before any problem-solving begins.
What this video demonstrates
— Introducing the exercise and explaining its purpose
— Setting ground rules for the speaker and listener roles
— Coaching each partner through a turn as speaker and as listener
— Redirecting when the listener interprets or rebuts instead of repeating
— Debriefing the experience c̄ the couple
— Assignment of "homework" to practice the exercise at home
