Guayaquil, Ecuador, has been hit by powerful thunderstorms and torrential rainfall, triggering widespread flooding across more than 50 sectors on November 1, 2026. Streets were inundated, residential neighbourhoods were affected and residents reported floodwater entering their homes as intense rainfall swept across the city. The powerful storm brought more than 400 lightning discharges within approximately 30 minutes, according to local reporting. One particularly powerful lightning strike measured 113 kiloamperes near Las Orquídeas in northern Guayaquil. Las Orquídeas, Bastión Popular, Guasmo Sur, Los Vergeles and other neighbourhoods reported flooding or water accumulation. A drainage channel reportedly overflowed in Las Orquídeas, while fallen trees and electricity disruptions added to the impact. The storm also affected surrounding areas, including Milagro, Yaguachi, Daule, Durán and Samborondón. Authorities deployed emergency and drainage crews as flooding affected major roads and residential areas. The situation was further complicated by high tides, with Ecuador's oceanographic institute warning that elevated water levels could increase flooding risks in coastal and estuarine areas. The storm comes amid Ecuador's wider El Niño-related rainfall emergency. Meteorological warnings also forecast further heavy rain and thunderstorms across parts of the country.
