Marxism and Humanism - (Althusser Study Group)

We meet for our final study session on Althusser's "For Marx" with a discussion of the essay "Marxism and Humanism" published in October 1963. We discuss the political context in which Althusser wrote this essay, his debates with the French Communist Party, the ending of the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the problem with socialist humanism when it is expressed as personal freedom and not as the demand for the end to class dictatorship.
