Isaac Sprague Family Timeline (1841-1887) | The World’s Thinnest Man

In this video, we trace the extraordinary and tragic life of Isaac W. Sprague, the 19th-century American sideshow performer who became famous as “The Living Skeleton.” Born in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1841, Isaac developed normally until around the age of twelve, when he began losing weight rapidly despite maintaining a strong appetite. Doctors were unable to explain what was happening to him, and as an adult he reportedly stood about 5 ft 6 in tall while weighing only around 43 pounds. Unable to support himself through ordinary work, Sprague entered the sideshow world in 1865 and soon became one of the human attractions associated with P. T. Barnum’s American Museum. He was reportedly paid $80 a week and became famous across the United States and beyond. After narrowly surviving the museum fire of 1868, Isaac stepped away from performing, married Tamar Moore, and became the father of three healthy sons. But financial pressure and his declining physical condition eventually pushed him back into the only profession that consistently paid him enough to support his family. By the 1880s, Sprague’s health had deteriorated dramatically. He sometimes carried milk with him so he could continually take in nourishment, and in 1882 his condition was described as aggressive muscular atrophy. Isaac died in poverty in Chicago on January 5, 1887, aged only 45. His wife and sons survived him, extending the Sprague family story long beyond the life of the man audiences once paid to see as a human curiosity.
