But when it came time to repaint this piece of automotive history, we discovered something unexpected: *we couldn't simply recreate its original factory paint!* And to make things even more special, I got to work alongside one of my childhood heroes, legendary automotive painter and television personality *Kevin Tetz of Paintucation!* Our GM EV1, VIN 212, has survived decades of neglect, damage, and an uncertain future. Originally, we hoped to preserve the existing paint, but years of exposure, damaged body panels, and replacement parts made one thing clear: if we're going to restore this car properly, it deserves a complete repaint. There's just one problem. The original 1997 green metallic finish uses materials and techniques that aren't readily available today. So how do you reproduce a historic color without the original ingredients? That's where Kevin's decades of experience come in! We travel to Kevin's shop with Billy, Darren, and a mountain of irreplaceable EV1 body panels. Together, we tackle plastic repairs, decades of damage, endless sanding, paint matching, and the challenge of getting a modern paint system to look as close as possible to the original GM finish. Along the way, we uncover some fascinating details about how these cars were originally built and painted, learn a tremendous amount about professional refinishing, and get some expert help from Rod Kraft of Griot's Garage(https://www.griotsgarage.com/) to take the finished panels to another level. This restoration has always been about preserving automotive history while doing justice to the people who created the EV1. Seeing these panels come back to life is another enormous milestone toward getting VIN 212 back on the road. And for me personally? Getting to paint this historic car alongside someone I grew up watching on television is an experience I'll never forget. *Special thanks to Kevin Tetz, Rod Kraft, Billy, Darren, Freddy, and everyone helping bring this incredible piece of history back to life!* Check out Kevin Tetz and @paintucation for more in-depth automotive painting and restoration techniques!    / @paintucation   Thank you to Axalta Coatings for supporting tbe project! https://www.axalta.com/us/en_US.html Subscribe to The Questionable Garage and follow along as we continue our mission to bring the GM EV1 back to life! #GMEV1 #EV1 #CarRestoration #KevinTetz #Paintucation #GeneralMotors #TheQuestionableGarage ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Questions?
