🇯🇵 Learn Japanese for travel through natural, real-life conversations you could actually experience in Japan. This Japanese listening and speaking practice follows travelers through airports, stations, buses, trains and other everyday situations, helping you understand how practical Japanese works in context.
This lesson is best suited to approximately JLPT N4–N3 learners who already understand some basic Japanese and want to become more comfortable listening and responding in realistic situations.
✈️ What you'll practice
The conversations cover practical Japanese for exchanging money, asking about airport gates, checking luggage, dealing with overweight baggage, using station coin lockers, reading bus timetables, asking for help, understanding transportation times, finding the correct train seat, navigating stations and travelling by Shinkansen.
You'll hear useful expressions for asking questions politely, explaining problems, requesting help, giving reasons, making suggestions and responding naturally.
The dialogues also show how Japanese changes depending on the situation. A conversation with airport or service staff uses more polite Japanese, while conversations between colleagues or fellow travelers become more relaxed and casual.
For example, the currency-exchange scene begins with the natural service greeting 「いらっしゃいませ」, followed by practical questions about exchanging money, exchange rates, fees and passports. japan story 6
Later travel situations introduce useful patterns such as:
〜たいんです for explaining what you want to do
〜てもらえますか for polite requests
〜たほうがいい for advice
〜かもしれない for possibilities
〜てしまう for unintended or completed actions
〜ばよかった for expressing what you wish you had done
〜ないと for things you need or have to do
〜ので / 〜から for explaining reasons
These aren't isolated textbook sentences. They appear inside conversations where the speakers have actual problems to solve.
🎧 How to study with this video
First, listen without stopping and try to understand the situation from context.
Then listen again while reading the Japanese. Pay attention to expressions that repeat across different conversations.
Next, repeat each sentence aloud. Try to imitate the speaker's rhythm and intonation instead of translating every word into English.
Finally, use shadowing practice: speak immediately after the character and try to maintain the same pace. You can also pause before the response and imagine what you would say if you were actually at the airport, station, bus stop or on the train.
🌸 Who is this lesson for?
This lesson is especially useful for JLPT N4–N3 Japanese learners, travelers preparing for Japan, and anyone who understands basic Japanese but struggles when conversations become longer and more natural.
N4 learners can focus on recognizing useful sentence patterns and travel vocabulary. N3 learners can focus more heavily on listening comprehension, natural responses, shadowing and speaking fluency.
