The historical transformation of Shirdi—a rural settlement in the Ahilyanagar district of
Maharashtra—into an international pilgrimage center is rooted in the hagiography and
documented life of Sai Baba. Although his exact ancestral lineage and birthplace remain
historically unverified, scholars and devotional texts place his birth around the year 1838.
Between 1842 and 1854, the young ascetic underwent a twelve-year period of intensive spiritual
practice (sadhana) under the guidance of a spiritual preceptor, traditionally identified as either a
Sufi fakir or the Hindu saint Venkusha, also known as Gopal Rao Deshmukh. Local traditions
preserve accounts of Baba meditating in a subterranean cave beneath a neem tree (Margosa)
in Shirdi, near the tomb of his guru.
Sai Baba’s initial public manifestation in Shirdi occurred between 1854 and 1857 as a youth of
approximately sixteen years. Following a brief departure in 1857, he returned permanently in
1858 accompanied by the wedding party of Chandbhai Patil's nephew. From this point until his
Mahasamadhi (divine departure) on October 15, 1918, he remained continuously in Shirdi for
six decades, attracting a growing circle of regional ascetics, colonial officials, and householder
devotees.
