Every list like this one gets built the same way. Somebody ranks fifty states on a spreadsheet, and out comes a top ten that is mostly low population and mild winters, and everybody nods. Here is the problem with that, and I want it said before you watch the rest. A state is far too big a unit to answer this question with. The difference between a suburb outside Boise and a ranch two hours from it is enormous, and it is a great deal bigger than the difference between Idaho and Montana. Two families on the same list, in the same state, will have completely different years. So this video does the ranking, because that is what you came for, and it tells you the four things that are actually doing the work underneath every entry on it. Once you have those four, you can score your own county rather than trusting mine. In this video: water, which decides more than everything else combined and which people almost never check before they move. Growing season and what a hundred and forty frost free days actually means when it is the only calendar that matters. Population density and the honest arithmetic on how far a city empties. And the one nobody puts on a map, which is whether you know anybody within a day's drive. I go through all ten with what each genuinely has going for it and what it costs you, including the winter that several of these lists quietly skip past, because a place that is defensible in July can be the thing that kills you in February. And number one is not the state most of these videos land on. It is the one that scores well on all four rather than exceptionally on one, and it is somewhere a good many people are already living. One thing I say plainly near the end. Moving states is an enormous decision with real costs, and for most people watching this, hardening the place they already live beats relocating to a better score on a list.
