In this video, I begin the next stage of development on a Texas persimmon I collected this spring. The tree has responded strongly, producing shoots approximately two feet long, but most of the growth was concentrated near the top. I shortened the strongest shoots to reduce their dominance and encourage more growth below the future trunk-chop location. I also experimented with different fronts and planting angles to better display the trunk’s movement, aged character and natural hollow. Using renderings, I explored three possible directions for the finished bonsai: 1. A traditional bonsai design 2. A naturalistic design 3. A hybrid combining traditional structure with natural movement The straight upper trunk may eventually be air-layered before the tree is shortened and its new canopy is developed. Which design would you choose for this Texas persimmon? Let me know in the comments—and tell me what you would do differently.
