There is no sound in this video - also includes still images As Summer 2016 winds down and I'm going on holiday tomorrow (and therefore won't have anything to share for a week) I thought it would be a nice idea to share this video I made of Great Yarmouth in the early 1990s using recovered VHS footage taken by my Grandad and some still photo's taken by my dad (some including me in the frame - my kind of family photo). We begin with some video footage taken around 1993/94 with a shot of 150257 "Queen Boadicea" departing Great Yarmouth on a service to Norwich followed by a pair of Class 158s coming in and then another single 158 DMU heading out to Liverpool. 37013 then brings in a short set from Norwich and is videoed running around before we cut to a selection of still photos from another Summer Saturday around 1991/92. The first image is an unidentified BR Blue Class 31 on a typical mixed rake of MK2 coaches passing Yarmouth Vauxhall Signal Box, framed nicely with the semaphores (which were still in use when I visited in 2015), the same 31 is then snapped again coming out of the headshunt to run around the set. The third shot is 86230 "The Duke of Wellington" which is on the stops and has a very young me stood by the door having just had the pleasure of taking a quick tour inside :) I can't recall how it came about but I think the set was propelled back in from the Carriage Sidings but I don't recall a resident shunting engine so perhaps it was a spare 31/37/47 that did the deed. Next up is 47592 "County of Avon" with a nice and dirty roof, oh and a hilarious looking younger me who aside from the awesome Ghostbusters attire (check out the matching "Slimer" shorts and slippers) is also trying out my Grandad's shades... After that we have a much better shot of 47569 "The Gloucester Regiment" bringing in 86223 "Norwich Union" on a service from London Liverpool St, we also see 47569 again after the run round and hooked up to the DBSO, once again with me posing... Out of all of the locomotives featured in this video only 47569 still survives as a runner, now with Colas as 47727 I finally managed to see her again last year when she came through Wigan with a grid in tow. 47592 still survives too, albeit as just a cab which has been preserved in Plymouth sporting it's last TOPS number as 47738. 37013 was withdrawn in 2003 and met the cutters torch in 2007, 86223 met it's fate in 2011 and 86230 went to the depot in the sky just two months after his classmate. I know this video may not be to everyone's taste but I felt that it was worth sharing a little spot of history back when Great Yarmouth in the summertime would see a fair amount of loco hauled traffic (even after a number of services had switched over to DMU) and when it was common to be invited into the cab of a loco for a run around (complete with a go at sounding the horn). Great Yarmouth still see's loco hauled services albeit with just two sets running from Norwich as the London "drags" finished in the late 2000s... Thanks for watching, let me know what you think - should I try and recover more VHS footage for sharing? Have a good summer, folks :)
