In this episode, we visited Yijing Food Street in Taiyuan, China.Originating in the 1980s, it gradually took shape in the 1990s as laid-off workers from the surrounding old chemical industrial zone set up stalls to make a living. It is the birthplace of Taiyuan Zhan Chuan (a type of skewer). In 2019, it was renovated and upgraded, transforming from an open-air stall into a standardized night market. Now, more than 30 years old, it is a true "late-night canteen" for locals.
This place is most popular from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and it's usually open until around 10:30 PM; the average price is $3.70 to $6 per person, making it extremely cost-effective.
Yijing is a popular night market for locals to stroll and eat. Within a few hundred meters of street, dozens of food stalls are clustered together; there are no large restaurants, only small stalls that have been established for many years. The air is thick with the smells of cooking oil and the shouts of vendors, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. This night market street has even been featured on CCTV (China Central Television).
Here you'll find their signature dish: Yijing Zhan Chuan, a unique specialty snack from Taiyuan, a true symbol of Yijing. Five skewers cost only $0.15 USD. Other delicacies include Liulin Wantuo, Hedong Chicken Broth Tofu Skewers, Fried Cold Noodles, Egg Rice Wine, Roasted Pig Trotters, Freshly Roasted Jujube Cake, Zenggao (steamed glutinous rice cake), Handmade Mochi, Bingfen (iced jelly), and many more – you can eat your fill!
