WIN versus Channel 9: Today Coverup #1 (2006-2007)

WIN, in protest with Nine Network, began covering all lower supers on the Today show in 2006. WIN was refusing to pay the Nine Network a new, more expensive annual affiliation fee to remain a provider of Nine Network programming to regional Australians. It is understood that the method of covering Today show supers was to prevent sponsor banners from appearing on the WIN Network, therefore stifling any regional revenue for the sponsor. In other words, WIN's way of saying "screw you and your sponsors". This video shows the 2007 version, but the coverup existed all throughout 2006 in a different design. When Today changed their graphics, people anticipated a removal of the coverup. It wasn't long before complaints came flooding in from viewers, who were sick of the obstructed viewing, and WIN's renewed intent to keep it. You could say the redesign of Today's graphics by the Nine Network marked the end of the full coverup by WIN.
