Lyrics There was a door where none had been, A silver light that let me in. The hallway smelled of summer rain, And somewhere, someone spoke my name. Beyond the windows, stars hung low, Above the streets of long ago. I heard you through the empty room, As soft as music through a wall. You had no face, you cast no shade, But every word felt safe to say. I asked you where your voice came from; You laughed and said, “It’s been so long.” And though I couldn’t place that sound, I sat upon the floor somehow, Like we had spent a hundred nights Talking beneath that violet sky. We talked of love and what it leaves, Of life and all its mysteries. The things I’d done, the roads untaken, The wishes I had almost shaken. You let me speak, you let me stay, With nothing I must hide away. Somewhere beyond the hands of time, Your unseen voice stayed close to mine. I told you, “I’m alright these days, Though sometimes I look back that way.” The room grew warm, the stars stood still; You said, “Then tell me, if you will.” So I spoke of names I seldom say, And afternoons that slipped away. You listened as the shadows stirred, And never hurried any word. A staircase floated past the glass, Each step a moment from my past. We watched them rise into the blue— I almost asked to follow you. But then a pale thread crossed the floor, And daylight gathered at the door. “Will you be here tomorrow night?” Your answer faded with the light. I woke before I heard the end, Inside my ordinary bed. No silver door, no violet sky, Just curtains moving at my side. I tried to find your voice again, Among the traffic and the rain. But morning took it all from me— The room, the stars, the mystery. And all day long, a tune remained From somewhere I could never name. I wished there was a door to find, But there was only sleep behind That place where you had stayed with me— A dream, and nothing more than fantasy.
