You saved $10,000 and earned $50 in interest in a whole year. What happens if you keep that up for 30 more years? In this video, we run the real math.
Saving is necessary, but on its own it rarely builds wealth. We compare the same $500 a month over 30 years in two places. In a 0.5% savings account it grows to about $194,000, which feels closer to $80,000 once inflation is counted. In a low-cost index fund, using a conservative 8% assumption, it grows to about $745,000. We also cover how compounding works, the Rule of 72, and why starting at 25 instead of 35 turns $300 a month into about $1,047,000 instead of $447,000.
You'll also see what a $1 million goal takes each way: about $2,778 a month by saving alone versus about $671 a month by investing. And we cover the other side of the story: why a 3-6 month emergency fund still matters, how to split your money into a safety bucket and a growth bucket, and why returns are never guaranteed.
