The Army’s New Machine Gun Is Already Being Replaced

The US Army's new SIG Sauer M250 machine gun only started reaching soldiers in 2024. Now SIG has shown the M250A1 at AUSA 2026: shorter, lighter, with a new stock, handguard and bipod. After the M7 rifle was overtaken by the M8 carbine, the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) machine gun is going down the same road. M249 SAW vs M250 vs M250A1 explained: why the Army chose the heavier 6.8x51 mm round, what soldiers reported after carrying the new gun, what changes on the M250A1 (barrel from 17.5 to 16 to 13 inches), and one number that shows what is really going on with the Army's next generation of weapons. 📌 CHAPTERS 0:00 The Army's new machine gun is already being redesigned 1:02 The M249 SAW: 40 years in service 1:33 850 rounds a minute, 1,000 rounds carried 2:05 Grenada to Afghanistan 2:38 Next Generation Squad Weapon 3:10 The M250: belt-fed, suppressed, 6.8 mm 3:37 Lighter than the M249 3:53 The catch: heavier ammunition 4:20 Fielding: 101st Airborne, Minnesota, 2027 4:57 What soldiers reported 5:31 The XM157 optic 5:50 M250A1: what changes 6:23 Lighter, but by how much? 6:41 Handguard, feed tray cover, bipod, gas valve 7:02 Two barrel lengths 7:16 Is it a done deal? 7:36 Israel and the flying M250 8:03 Fixing a mistake or improving a good gun? 8:29 40 years vs 2 years 9:08 The number: three 9:55 The real lesson 10:31 Takeaway 💬 Should the Army have tested these weapons longer before fielding them, or is it better to get them to soldiers fast and fix them along the way?
