In May 2025, a federal judge ordered the biggest AI company on earth to keep every ChatGPT chat its users deleted. You hit delete. It didn't.
Episode 11 of Who Gets to Decide? follows your data back to 1958: a 1982 Commodore 64 running an AI, the Navy's Perceptron, one Pentagon office funding the first AI labs and the network that became the internet, DARPA's LifeLog dying the same day Facebook launched, PRISM, reCAPTCHA, DeepFace. Then the rap sheet: Google, Meta, LinkedIn, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Zoom and OpenAI all made the same move with your posts, photos, calls and chats. And what it costs real people when the machine makes the call.
Every document is on screen. VERIFIED = primary documents, REPORTED = news coverage. My connections are on THEORY and OPINION cards, and I say out loud what I can't prove. Their side is in here too. Not legal advice.
Who gets to decide what happens to your data?
HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU? Is there anything you typed into an app you'd want back right now? Tell me in the comments. If you're okay with it, I might share it in a future episode. I'll ask first.
OpenAI, Google, LinkedIn and Meta were asked for comment before publishing. None had replied. Any reply will be added here.
