The check engine light was not on, but there was a permanent code of p0232, indicating an issue with the secondary fuel pump circuit. Because I had already experienced a similar issue that left me stranded many years ago in my own 1988 Ford Escort GT, I decided to start with the inertia safety switch first. If we had power there, I would have continued down to the fuel pump and wiring, but if there was no power at the inertia switch when cranking, I would have looked to the fuel pump relay and/or fuel pump fuse. After pressing the inertia switch, the vehicle started right up. It died when I was touching the wires under the switch, and it's possible that the connection was loose, but after taking it out and making sure that the connections were good, it's been working fine. When I gave the car back to the owner, and explained what I had found, his son mentioned that he was stomping his feet to the beat of some music pretty hard, including stomping hard on the brake pedal and that might have been what triggered the inertia switch. I wasn't able to erase the permanent code (continuous memory code), but the computer should recognize that the condition is fixed after a few drive cycles and it should clear on it's own.
