How Andreas Almgren actually won the World Half Marathon title, told through the numbers the TV pictures never showed.
Henrik Ingebrigtsen once introduced him as "the best European runner ever… without a medal." He finished fourth at three European Championships over three different distances. Then he changed how he trained, and in Copenhagen he became the first man from outside Africa in 30 years to win the world half marathon title, running 58:06 for a new European record.
We go through the race split by split: every 5 km faster than the last, the move between 15 and 20 km, and a final stretch run at 2:31 per kilometre after 20 km of racing.
UPDATE: Almgren won the 2026 NYC Marathon in his debut (2:06:01)
