How do eight Vietnamese clam farmers plant an estimated 150 million baby clams in a single day? Discover the fascinating process of clam farming on Vietnam’s vast coastal tidal flats. In this episode of Vietnam Coastal Life, we follow the journey of tiny baby clams from a coastal nursery to a clam farm nearly 3.7 miles (6 km) offshore. At the nursery, the clams grow from just 0.5 mm to around 2 mm before being harvested. Men collect the tiny clams from the water, while women carefully clean, sift, and pack them into mesh bags. Mr. Thuy checks the clam seed, estimating around 100,000 baby clams per kilogram. Mr. Thong then arrives by boat to transport approximately 3,300 pounds (1.5 metric tons) of baby clams to the tidal flats. With the tide still high, eight clam farmers spread the tiny clams by hand across a 17-acre (7-hectare) farm. If conditions are favorable, these clams will grow to harvest size in about one year. Experience the real life of Vietnamese clam farmers, their traditional coastal work, and a community whose daily lives follow the rhythm of the tides.
