At three years old, Louis Braille picked up one of his father's awls and blinded himself with it. Twelve years later, in a dormitory in Paris after lights out, he used the same kind of tool to punch six dots into paper — and gave blind people something they had never had: the ability to read and write on their own. This is the full story. The village that refused to let him beg. The school in Paris with fourteen books that weighed ten kilograms each. The army code that gave him the idea, and the soldier who refused to simplify it. The night-writing that became six dots, two across and three down, small enough for a fingertip to feel all at once. And then the part that is rarely told: his own school banned his system. A new director confiscated the slates and burned the books, and the pupils kept writing it in secret anyway. Braille died of tuberculosis at forty-three, two years before France adopted the system that now carries his name. Today almost every blind person who reads uses what a fifteen-year-old boy worked out in the dark. Chapters are below. Thank you for watching. -- TIMELINE -- 0:00 The boy who was not sleeping 1:04 1.
