Before squat racks, calibrated plates, and modern powerlifting, there was Milo Steinborn. The German-born strongman arrived in America in 1921 and quickly became famous for something that still looks almost impossible in old photographs: brutally heavy, full-depth squats performed without a rack. Steinborn is credited with squatting 553 pounds during the 1920s, at a time when few American lifters treated the heavy squat as a serious strength exercise. To get the bar onto his shoulders, he would stand the loaded barbell on one end, position himself beneath it, and lever the entire weight across his back — a strange old technique that eventually carried his name.
