Medicine is older than doctors. Older than writing. Maybe even older than humans. In this video, we follow the evidence from a Neanderthal who survived crippling injuries to a child in Borneo who had a leg amputated 31,000 years ago and lived for years afterward.
We look at what archaeologists have actually found: healed bones, worn teeth, tartar with traces of plants, a frozen man with a first-aid kit, and skulls with surgical holes. And we mark clearly where scientists still disagree.

📚 What we covered
• Shanidar 1, the Neanderthal who lived for years with severe injuries
• The Dmanisi skull (about 1.8 million years old) and the debate over whether others helped him eat
• Rakus, the Sumatran orangutan who treated a facial wound with a medicinal plant (2022 observation)
• El Sidrón Neanderthals: plant traces in dental calculus, and why scientists say “possible, not proven”
• The debated “flower burial” at Shanidar
• Prehistoric dentistry in Italy and Slovenia
• Ötzi: tattoos, birch polypore fungus, parasite eggs
• Trepanation in Europe and ancient Peru
• The Liang Tebo amputation, Borneo, about 31,000 years ago
• The Edwin Smith Papyrus, Egypt, about 3,600 years ago
Note: several of these findings are still debated. We’ve tried to label which statements are well established, which are interpretations, and which are only hypotheses.
