Kingdom Character — Matthew 4:23–5:12 | Sermon on the Mount
What is the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount?
In Matthew 4:23–5:12, we are introduced to Jesus’ teaching concerning the character of those who belong to the Kingdom of God. As we begin this series through Matthew 5–7, we consider how Jesus teaches not merely what His followers should do, but what Kingdom citizens are like.
The Sermon on the Mount is not a checklist for earning salvation or a new law by which we become Christians. Instead, Jesus describes the character and conduct of those who have been claimed by God. This introductory message examines the connection between Jesus, Moses, the Kingdom of God, and the Old Testament background to the Beatitudes.
We also consider what Jesus means when He calls His people “blessed.” Biblical happiness is not primarily a temporary emotional response to favorable circumstances. True blessing and human flourishing are rooted in a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The Beatitudes therefore challenge the modern pursuit of happiness, comfort, success, and prosperity and point us instead toward the life for which God created us.
As we begin the Sermon on the Mount, the question is not simply, “Am I happy?” but, “What is my happiness rooted in?” Those who are in Christ are blessed now, while awaiting the fullness of that blessing in the age to come.
