The Kimberley is about the size of California, yet fewer than 40,000 people live there. California has almost 40 million. The answer starts with some of the oldest rock on the continent.
A 1.8-billion-year-old plateau, a Devonian reef you can walk through, the oldest known heart of any jawed animal, the striped domes of the Bungle Bungles, Wolfe Creek Crater, the 2023 flood that broke the Fitzroy River Bridge, 11-metre tides and the Horizontal Falls, Gwion Gwion rock art, Jandamarra, one of Australia's most famous cattle drives and the Argyle pink diamonds.
