My lure got stuck across the river — going after it got me the fish of the day

The locals will tell you Rock Creek is fished out. There's a worn trail down to every good hole, these trout have seen every lure in Montana, and they've learned. I gave it a full day anyway — spinning rod and fly rod both, hole after hole, and for hours all I could pull out were little ones. Then my lure hung up on a log halfway across the river. Going after it turned into the best cast I made all summer. The whole day is in here: reading the water and where fish actually hold, why my flies would not get deep enough, the biggest Panther Martin I own catching the smallest fish in the creek, going in mid-river, and the one fish that finally made the day worth it.
