Step back into television history with Amos ’n’ Andy, the groundbreaking and controversial television series that premiered in 1951 with an all-Black principal cast. In Episode 1, “Kingfish Gets Drafted,” George “Kingfish” Stevens faces the possibility of military service, sparking the comedy and schemes that became hallmarks of the series. The television version of Amos ’n’ Andy occupies a complicated place in American media history. While it provided rare leading television roles for Black actors during the early 1950s, the series was also strongly criticized for its stereotypical portrayals of African Americans. The NAACP campaigned against the program, and CBS ended production after two seasons. Today, the series offers an opportunity to examine Black representation, stereotypes, race, media, and the history of African Americans on television. 📺 Tellers Untold Archives explores historic films, television programs, documentaries, and archival footage through the lens of Black history and media representation.
