Plasma TVs were once some of the most admired televisions you could buy. Their deep blacks, smooth motion, and wide viewing angles earned them a loyal following—yet within a few years, plasma virtually disappeared while LCD became the default television technology around the world.
The obvious explanation is that LCD simply became “better.” But the real story is far more interesting.
Behind the screens was an enormous industrial battle over factories, manufacturing scale, panel sizes, energy use, retail conditions, falling prices, and where manufacturers were willing to invest billions for the next generation of televisions.
