The skies over Rabat and Salé turned electric as the Nigeria U‑17 Women’s National Team, affectionately known as the Flamingos, soared into the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA U‑17 Women’s World Cup with a statement-making 4-0 triumph over Samoa U‑17 Women’s National Team on Match Day 3 of the group stage. From the opening whistle the Flamingos were in determined mood. In the 13th minute they broke the deadlock: veteran playmaker Shakirat Moshood threaded a precise pass to Queen Joseph, who calmly tucked it home. That early strike set the tone. Then in the 28th minute Nigeria were awarded a penalty — and Moshood stepped up and delivered, sending the Flamingos into a 2-0 lead. Six minutes before halftime, Joseph struck again (34′) on an assist from Nguemo Terlumun, to send the girls into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage. In the second half, the momentum stayed firmly with Nigeria — and in the 67th minute Azeezat Oduntan capitalised on an assist by Chisom Nwachukwu to seal the emphatic 4-0 win. This victory did more than just fill the scoresheet — it propelled the Flamingos into the knockout round. Despite having registered one win and two losses in the group (scoring five and conceding five, finishing with three points and a goal difference of zero), Nigeria qualified as one of the “third-best” teams among the groups. Africa’s representation in that spot included Nigeria (GD 0), Zambia U‑17 Women’s National Team (GD -2), Morocco U‑17 Women’s National Team (GD -3) and Netherlands U‑17 Women’s National Team (GD -5) — all on three points, with the Flamingos coming out on top among them. It’s worth noting that the top 12 teams from the group stage qualified directly: the likes of Italy U‑17 Women’s National Team, Brazil U‑17 Women’s National Team, North Korea U‑17 Women’s National Team, Mexico U‑17 Women’s National Team, United States U‑17 Women’s National Team, China U‑17 Women’s National Team, Canada U‑17 Women’s National Team, France U‑17 Women’s National Team, Spain U‑17 Women’s National Team, Colombia U‑17 Women’s National Team, Japan U‑17 Women’s National Team and Paraguay U‑17 Women’s National Team. Nigeria, Zambia, Morocco and the Netherlands joined the knockout stage via the third-best ranking route.
