On 18 February 1990, Freddie Mercury walked onto the Brit Awards stage at London's Dominion Theatre with Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon to collect Queen's award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Brian gave the speech. Freddie held the award, leaned to the microphone and said three words. Almost nobody in the theatre knew he had been living with AIDS since 1987. He did not perform and he did not explain. He let his bandmates carry the moment, then went back to work on Innuendo. Watch until the end to discover how, two years later, two of his bandmates returned to a Brit Awards stage and announced a concert the whole world would watch. Some goodbyes are only heard later. Is there a goodbye in your own life you only recognised later? Where are you watching from? Share your city or country in the comments.
