Today we return to the greatest of them all: The Beatles, with one of their most beautiful early ballads, “If I Fell”, from A Hard Day’s Night. Thanks to the magnificent restoration of the film footage, we can enjoy this wonderful performance with remarkable sound and picture quality. “If I Fell” is a perfect example of how The Beatles could create something extraordinary with apparently simple ingredients: two clean guitars, bass, drums and, above all, those unforgettable vocal harmonies. In this reaction, I take a closer look at the song’s arrangement, its beautiful John Lennon and Paul McCartney vocal harmonies, the guitars and the deceptively sophisticated simplicity that made The Beatles so unique. I also share some personal memories of playing “If I Fell” in a Beatles tribute band for almost two years, including just how difficult those harmonies could be to reproduce live. Balancing three voices on stage, adapting to different microphone levels and making everything blend properly was much harder than it might sound — but performing this song was always an incredible experience.
