Psalm 23 – The Lord Is My Shepherd Through Every Valley is a peaceful, Scripture-centered journey through one of the most beloved passages in the Bible. From green pastures and still waters to the valley of the shadow of death, Psalm 23 reminds us that God’s care does not disappear when the road becomes difficult. The same Shepherd who leads His people into places of rest remains with them through their darkest valleys. David begins with a simple confession of trust: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” He speaks of a Shepherd who provides, restores the soul, and leads His people in paths of righteousness. Yet Psalm 23 never promises a life without suffering, uncertainty, or fear. The path itself eventually enters the valley. What changes everything is the presence of the Shepherd: “For you are with me.” In this calming bedtime Bible story, we will slowly explore the meaning of the green pastures, still waters, paths of righteousness, the valley of the shadow of death, the shepherd’s rod and staff, the table prepared in the presence of enemies, the overflowing cup, and the promise that goodness and mercy will follow God’s people. We will also explore how the biblical image of the shepherd reaches forward to John 10, where Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd.” The Good Shepherd does more than guide His sheep—He lays down His life for them. Psalm 23 does not teach that faithful believers will never experience grief, hardship, uncertainty, or fear. Instead, it gives us something deeper: confidence in the presence and faithfulness of God. Faith does not pretend the valley is harmless. Faith remembers who walks with us inside it. The same Shepherd who leads beside still waters walks with His people through the darkest valley. The valley is real, but it is not empty.
