There are ten survival myths out there that can get you killed, and the worst of it is you have probably believed a few of them your whole life. Not because you were careless, but because you were taught them by people you trusted, who got them from a movie or an old book that had it flat wrong.
The most dangerous one on this list is number one, and it is the cruelest of them all, because it feels warm going down while it is killing you.
In this video, a thirty-year backcountry ranger counts down 10 survival myths that can kill you, and gives you the truth that belongs in the place of each one.
You will discover:
✓ Why moss walks you in circles instead of pointing north, and what to read instead ✓ Why hacking into a cactus for water can leave you worse off than doing nothing ✓ Why the clearest mountain creek can still put you flat three days later ✓ Why cooking rotten meat does not undo the poison already in it ✓ Why cutting and sucking a snakebite adds a wound and buys you nothing ✓ What actually helps a snakebite while you get to a hospital ✓ Why friction fire fails the cold, scared, untrained person almost every time ✓ Why eating snow in the cold marches you toward the thing most likely to kill you ✓ Why a huge fire with no shelter is how people are found cold in the morning ✓ Why the drink that feels warmest is the one cooling you down the fastest
The most important rule is simple. Learn the truth while you are warm and safe at home, not on the worst night of your life, when your body is begging for the easy lie and there is nobody there to correct you.
Every myth on this list earns its place by feeling right. That is exactly why it gets believed and exactly why it kills. The move from a movie always looks decisive, and the truth is usually quieter and less dramatic, which is why the truth loses at a campfire and wins in the real dark.
A few of these are worth carrying in plain words. If you did not boil, filter, or treat the water, you do not drink it, however pretty it looks, and a hard rolling boil for a full minute is the method that never clogs and never runs out. Carry two reliable ways to make fire, a lighter and a ferro rod, kept dry in a sealed bag, and learn the friction fire at home as a backup, never as your only hope. When the cold has you, keep the flask capped, get off the ground, eat something with fat and sugar, and build your shelter before your fire. And for a snakebite, keep the limb still and low, stay calm, get anything tight off before the swelling starts, and get to antivenom as fast as you safely can.
The person who knows the difference between what feels true and what is true is the calm one when it all goes wrong, doing the right thing while everyone else does the thing from the movie. That is not fear. That is being awake, and being someone the wilderness cannot fool.
Tell us in the comments which of these ten you believed before today, and which one nearly caught you or someone you love out there.
