Born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Cobourg, Ontario, Steve Smith developed into one of hockey’s most resilient and accomplished defensemen. After starring for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Smith made his NHL debut in 1984 before becoming a full-time member of the Oilers for the 1985–86 season. He quickly established himself as a strong presence on one of the greatest teams in NHL history, helping Edmonton capture three Stanley Cup championships in 1987, 1988, and 1990. After seven seasons in Edmonton, Smith was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1991, marking the start of one of the most significant chapters of his career and the beginning of his lasting connection to Chicago. Over the next six seasons, he became a cornerstone of the Blackhawks’ defense, bringing a determination and consistency to a team that remained among the NHL’s top contenders throughout the 1990s. In his first few seasons in Chicago, Smith recorded a career-high 57 points in 78 games while forming a formidable defensive pairing with Hall of Famer Chris Chelios. Together, they provided the Blackhawks with an impenetrable defensive presence and became central figures during one of the most memorable eras in Chicago hockey. Smith’s impact extended beyond the NHL’s regular season. He was selected to the 1991 NHL All-Star Game at Chicago Stadium and later represented Canada on the international stage, helping the country win the 1991 Canada Cup in Toronto. During his NHL career with the Oilers, Blackhawks, and Calgary Flames, Smith appeared in 804 regular-season games, recording 72 goals, 303 assists, and 2,139 penalty minutes, along with 134 playoff games and 52 points. Smith concluded his playing career with Calgary, where he served as team captain before retiring in December 2000 after 16 NHL seasons. His passion for the game continued long after his playing days. He transitioned into coaching and scouting, working in the NHL for the Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Buffalo Sabres. As a scout with Chicago, he remained connected to the organization and was part of the Blackhawks’ management group when the team captured the Stanley Cup in 2010. In 2021, Smith joined the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League as an assistant coach and later became the team’s interim head coach in 2023. After more than four decades in professional hockey, he concluded his career following the 2023–24 season. He and his wife are proud parents of five children. From Stanley Cup champion to Blackhawks cornerstone and later team scout, Smith's hard nosed play and decade spanning connection to the franchise have left a lasting mark on Chicago sports history.
