Everyday hygiene usually included washing the hands, face, and feet. People used jugs, basins, and water, sometimes with soap, lye, herbs, or scented preparations. Medieval medical texts explicitly recommended keeping the body clean and regarded bathing as beneficial for removing dirt after physical work. Full-body washing happened less often than it does today, since it required water, fuel, time, space, and sometimes assistance. Still, it was a normal practice rather than something unusual. In summer, peasants often washed in rivers and lakes. In our film, we included scenes of boys bathing in a river under the watch of armed guards. The water was far from warm, and the weather was overcast, so the actors had to show a certain amount of courage during filming. The scene itself will last for about twenty seconds in the film, but those seconds took much longer to shoot in reality. The cinematographer had it worst of all, standing neck-deep in the water with the camera. Still, everyone had a great time filming
