“What I Used to Know” is a song about the parts of ourselves we think we lost somewhere along the road. The gravel under the tires. The radio through the static. A porch light waiting in the evening. The people who knew your laugh before they saw your face. The kid who believed the stars were close because nobody had taught him otherwise yet. Then life gets loud. Bills. Work. Fear. Survival. Expectations. Becoming who you think you’re supposed to be. And somewhere in all of that, you can start wondering what happened to the person you were before the world started naming you. But maybe we don’t lose that person. Maybe some things simply get buried beneath working hands, old wounds, responsibility, noise, and years. Maybe growing older isn’t about abandoning who we were. Maybe it’s finally becoming old enough to understand what that younger version of us already knew. About home. About people. About God. About wonder. About the quiet things that somehow mattered most. This song is for anybody who has ever looked backward... not because they wanted to live in the past, but because they realized there might still be something back there worth carrying forward. Some things survive the fire without telling you the cost. And sometimes the road ahead gets clearer when you honor what you used to know. Written from the road. Carried by faith. Still becoming. — Joey G R.E.P. ✝️ ....... [Verse 1] I used to know the sound of gravel underneath my mama’s tires, back roads bending through the trees like they were keeping old desires. I used to know the radio, that soft voice through the static, old songs carrying childhood like a box up in the attic. I used to know the way the world felt before it tried to name me, before the bills, before the fear, before survival came to claim me. I used to know a quieter me, or maybe I just miss him, the boy who thought the stars were close because nobody had convinced him. [Chorus] What I used to know still knocks inside my chest, like a house I moved away from but never truly left. What I used to know ain’t gone, it’s just below, buried under working hands and places I outgrow. I keep losing who I was trying to become who I’m supposed to be, but what I used to know still knows something about me. [Verse 2] I used to know my people by their laugh before their face, by the way they said your name like it still had a place. I used to know that dinner tables could turn broke folks into kings, that a porch light in the evening was a holy little thing. I used to know that getting older was supposed to make you wise, but I’ve seen grown men lose their souls just trying to survive. I used to know the difference between quiet and alone, now I sit with both of them and call them both my home. [Bridge] Maybe I didn’t lose it. Maybe life just got loud. Maybe innocence don’t disappear, it just stops speaking proud. Maybe the boy I buried ain’t angry that I changed. Maybe he’s just waiting for me to call him by his name. Maybe what I used to know wasn’t simple because it was small. Maybe it was sacred because I hadn’t explained it all. [Verse 3] I used to know God different, before I tried to prove Him right, before my prayers got polished up and dressed for Sunday light. I used to talk to heaven like it lived beneath my skin, now I’m learning faith ain’t leaving — it’s remembering again. I used to know that tears could fall without needing a reason, that every part of life has weather, every soul has got a season. And maybe I’m not going backward. Maybe I’m being shown that the road ahead gets clearer when you honor what you’ve known. [Final Chorus] What I used to know still knocks inside my chest, like a hymn I half remember when my spirit needs some rest. What I used to know ain’t dead, it’s just been quiet, like truth beneath the noise, like peace beneath the riot. I keep losing who I was trying to become who I’m supposed to be, but what I used to know still knows something about me. [Outro] So I won’t call it gone. I won’t call it lost. Some things survive the fire without telling you the cost. And maybe growing older isn’t letting childhood go… Maybe it’s finally understanding what I used to know.
