Four thousand years ago, Babylon was the richest city on earth, and it had almost nothing to start with. No gold mines, no forests, no stone. Its wealth was built, and it was learned. In Episode 1 of The Richest Man in Babylon: The Entire Story, we follow Bansir the chariot builder and Kobbi the musician, two skilled, hardworking men who can't find two shekels between them, to the courtyard of their boyhood friend Arkad, now the richest man in Babylon. Arkad tells them how a young scribe bargained a night's work for one sentence from the moneylender Algamish: "A part of all you earn is yours to keep." Then come the hard lessons: the brickmaker's worthless jewels, the feast that ate his savings' children, and the patience that finally made him rich. Lessons in this episode: • Pay yourself first: keep at least one tenth of everything you earn • Protect your savings: take advice only from people who have done it themselves • Let your money work, and don't spend what it earns ("don't eat its children") • Wealth grows like a tree from one small seed • What you're really buying is peace of mind Chapters 0:00 Introduction: The Richest City on Earth 1:59 The Man Who Desired Gold 8:39 The Richest Man in Babylon 11:40 Arkad's Youth: The Scribe and the Moneylender 14:23 A Part of All You Earn Is Yours to Keep 18:28 The Brickmaker's Jewels 22:04 Eating Your Children 24:07 The Steward of Algamish 26:40 Is It Luck, or Is It Will? 33:28 What Babylon Teaches Us Today 35:51 Next Time: The Seven Cures for a Lean Purse Next episode: King Sargon asks Arkad to teach all of Babylon.
